Bitcoin mining is an energy-intensive process that has a significant environmental impact. It consumes around 110 TWh of energy per year and results in 53 megatons of CO2 emissions. The high energy consumption is due to the Proof of Work algorithm used in the Bitcoin blockchain. To reduce the environmental impact, mining can be done using renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency, mining in colder climates, and switching to Proof of Stake. Critics argue that the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining is not justified by its benefits. Nonetheless, Bitcoin mining is an important process for securing the Bitcoin blockchain
